Joe and Gladys Helton

April 28, 1933 ~ September 22, 2020 (age 87)

Joe and Gladys Bible Helton, they were married 61 years 9 months, husband and wife, but also best friends. They met by chance in 1956 at Canslers store in Lowland Tennessee. Joe would go to the Army in May of that same year, so they stayed in contact through letters. Once Joe completed his service to his country and returned home they dated and were married December 18, 1958.
Together they had 2 children, Gary Dale and Lisa Diane.
Gary, was gifted with one son, Brandon Scott Helton. Lisa with 2 daughters, Whitney J Ferrell (fiancé David Bullington) and Samantha M Starnes. Stevie Starnes became part of their extended family and he was special to Gladys and to Joe.
Joe, a Carpenter by trade was instrumental with the construction and remodeling of many homes in the area. His woodworking talents were extensive. Gladys, worked, managed, and later owned a convenient store for several years, her smile was popular with many.
Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Edith Horner, sister, Virginia Gibson Capps, brother George Helton, mother Beulah Lane Helton, and father Luther C Helton and sister Opal Helton.
He is survived by his brother Rev. Bill Helton and his wife Cinda "Cindy" and several nieces and nephews. Joe's "music friends" were all a part of his extended family, as they were together as often as possible making music together. Playing music was a part of his life until his death, having them at their home weekly. Joe made many albums and later played for assisted living facilities and other venues.
Gladys Bible Helton was preceded in death by her brother Robert "Bobby " Bible, mother Margaret Trantham Bible, father, Dudley "Dud" Robert Bible. She has a nephew Chad Robert Bible in Rossville, Georgia that she loved deeply. She has several relatives in the Chattanooga and Asheville and surrounding areas. Among her hobbies were reading, she did that daily and of course taking care of her husband.
Both were saved and Baptized at Cedar Grove Baptist Church and after living in many places they made their permanent home on a small farm in the Lowland Community not far from where they originally met.
Many touched their lives in so many ways throughout their years and held special places to them and this writer has probably missed much. Please know if you were ever in any way associated in their lives, big or small, they were the type that always remembered and recalled many stories with family members. Both Joe and Gladys carried a love for all, those that passed through or stayed within their lives were all special to them.
